Diana Wildschut - Science and peer production

What can scientists do for grass roots initiatives? Citizens all over the world start taking over tasks from governments, NGO's and businesses. How can they benefit from the outcomes of scientific research, as well as contribute to it?

Melle Smets - Turtle car project in Ghana

Artist Melle Smets and researcher Joost van Onna followed the trail of Europe’s discarded cars to capitalism’s periphery to learn about ‘System D’ or Système Débrouillardise, the capacity to be able to think on your feet, to adapt and to improvise in order to finish a job properly. In the Ghanaian neighbourhood of Suami Magazine, over 200,000 craftsmen recycle our discarded car scrap. Together with these resourceful craftsmen, Melle and Joost created a new, characteristic African car: the SMATI Turtle 1.

Peter Troxler - Launch of the Dutch Chapter of the Open Source Hardware Associasion OSHWA-NL

So far, the Open Source Hardware Association (OSHWA) has been a US-centric enterprise. At Ouishare Fest this year, European chapters have been announced -- one in Italy and one in the Netherlands. This session will introduce the work of OSHWA, relate it to other Open Source initiatives. And we will, together, kick-off the Dutch Chapter by collectively translating some key documents from English into Dutch.

Harmen G. Zijp - Proceedings of the Grassroots University of Amersfoort

A few years ago the idea was born to start a university in the city of Amersfoort, a town with no academic past and in the direct vicinity of 4 renowned universities. The case was made for a bottom-up research facility, ran by a community of independent researchers and citizen scientists. This talk gives an overview of what happened since.

Joachim de Koning - Hybrid Assets

A meta-protocol and blockchain integration solution for transacting value across different digital currency systems would allow for multiple decentralized financial platforms to exchange value and thus form a coherent cryptosphere, without needing intermediary financial institutions. We will explore a method by which this could be implemented.

Lipika Bansal - How to become a citizen scientist?

This workshop focuses on approaches of co-research and -design with youth (especially young women) from urban villages, New Delhi, describing various social issues through personal stories. During the workshop approaches and methodologies will be shared on the basis of case studies. Next we will explore what forms of biochemical analysis we require and what type of (affordable) tools we can develop in order to empower young women, so that they can transform into confident citizen scientists.

de War beekeepers - Bee hive monitoring

The bee hives on the roof of De WAR are fitted with sensors that can measure the most important parameters in a bee population. Already after a month, the sensors have shown valuable patterns that might help us understand the dynamics in populations of honey bees. After this lecture there will be an excursion to the bees that reside on the roof of De WAR.

Nicole Esteje - Sortition, innovation in democracy

This lecture is about finding new strategies for democratic representation and peer to peer implementations of decision making. In Amersfoort an experiment will start this fall which departs from the model developed by Terrill Bouricius, and recently brought to broader attention by David van Reybrouck in his book 'Tegen verkiezingen'.

Jos den Hartog - How to start a bottom up grassroots Fablab in Ethiopia?

Hosting 30 percent of the urban population of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, is one of the fastest growing cities. Its population is currently thought to be 4 million. High rate of unemployment, concentration of slum dwellings, and poor housing, infrastructure and sanitary development, characterize Addis more than the few good features it possesses. Together with my Ethiopian friends we have decided to start a funding campaign for a grassroots Fablab in Addis. We will use self-built and open source machines. The focus of Fablab Addis is on recycling of materials. Through Fablab we hope it will stimulate entrepreneurial drive, raises self-esteem, and incites leadership, enabling them to use their skills, and channel their initiative to seize opportunities.

Marga Jacobs - Translating science into political action

In the Netherlands local environmental grassroots groups can have a considerable influence on (local) politics. Three cases will be discussed of groups active on: (1) health impacts of pesticide drift on people living near bulb fields, (2) drilling for scale gas, (3) the siting of a primary school near a highway. The active members of the groups obtained scientific information from different sources. They succeeded in transferring this information to their community and to stakeholders involved in environmental policy making. The focus in this workshop are the lessons learned and how they can be applied.

Judith Vos - Short chain food supply

About 3 years ago, Voedselkollektief Amersfoort started. It is one of many short chain food supply initiatives developing worldwide. This presentation focuses on the development of Voedselkollektief Amersfoort and some other initiatives, after briefly mentioning the current food system. All of these initiatives can be seen as experiments to re-shape our food supply, as well as how we organize ourselves as citizens/consumers. After the presentation there's room for questions and comments, it would be nice to discuss the challenges there are in trying to restructure the current food system, starting small-scale and bottom-up.

Pieter van der Hijden - Review of MOOC: Tinkering Fundamentals: A Constructionist Approach to STEM Learning

Coursera recently offered a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Tinkering Fundamentals: A Constructionist Approach to STEM Learning. My goals and expectations for this course were: x improve my way of developing and facilitating tinkering workshops aiming at STEM learning x learning how to transfer these insights to other Fab Lab staff members x being inspired by a lot of funny and nice ideas x experiencing how it is to attend a Coursera MOOC I will share my experiences with you.
